  47. Currently the GAMES, VIEW and INFORMATION menus are
  48. fully complete. Only the file menu is still under
  49. construction.

  53.                 TO RUN PROGRAM:
  54.  
  55. First load your mouse driver (usually done from
  56. AUTOEXEC.BAT).  The mouse driver should be capable of
  57. placing a mouse cursor on a graphics screen.  Some older
  58. mouse drivers only worked with text screens and lower (CGA)
  59. graphics resolutions.  The latest Microsoft and Logitech
  60. mouse drivers support every graphics mode, through VGA.  The
  61. program will not RUN without a mouse driver loaded.

  63. Then enter the command USA to run the USA program.  All of
  64. these files must be in the current directory, when USA is
  65. executed:

  72. After the title screen, you are prompted to select a
  73. graphics mode.  The program detects all graphics modes your
  74. system is capable of, and allows you to make a selection.
  75. (For example, if you have VGA but you would like to run it
  76. in CGA, you may do so.)

  78. Next a horizontal menu bar, across the top of the display,
  79. is presented, and a US map of the contiguous 48 states is
  80. drawn.  The program should be fairly self explanitory.

  84. MOUSE OPERATION:
  85.  
  86. When a meny bar item is clicked on once, with the left
  87. button, a menu pulls down.  (You don't have to click/drag it
  88. down.)  Point to the item of interest and click the left
  89. button once to select it.  To get rid of a pulled down menu,
  90. simply click once on an area of the screen outside this
  91. menu.  Then you may move the mouse pointer to the top
  92. horizontal menu bar to make another selection.  There is one
  93. status line at the bottom of the display.  Information is
  94. often written here, such as messages that the USA database
  95. is being accessed.  This line is also used for keyboard
  96. input, such as typing in the State names in the State game.
  97. Generally the LEFT mouse button is uset to select an item,
  98. and the RIGHT button is used to CANCEL or END some
  99. operation, or sequence of operations.  Most of it should be
  100. fairly self explanitory.

  113. Updates         - Information on upcoming USA updates
  114. Game            - Play states, capitals, or states &
  115.                   capitals game.
  116. View            - View 48 states, 50 states, variable
  117.                   zoom, or pick a state.
  118. Information     - Pick a state and view population,
  119.                   area, city locations, capital,
  120.                   largest city, population density, or
  121.                   find any of 32,000 cities across the
  122.                   USA.  A single state must be on the
  123.                   screen when using this mode, so you
  124.                   may be prompted to point and click on
  125.                   a state of interest, before these
  126.                   options are made available.
  127. File            - Printer hard copy, print city names,
  128.                   and more.  This menu is still under
  129.                   construction as of Sun  04-14-1991.
  130.                   REGISTERED USERS will be notified of
  131.                   this update, when available. (I
  132.                   simply haven't had the TIME to get it
  133.                   done, but will SOON if I get a lot of
  134.                   registered users.)
  135. Exit            - Exit the program to DOS.

  139.  
  140. States                  - Test your knowledge of the
  141.                           states.
  142. Capitals                - Test your knowledge of the
  143.                           states' capitals.
  144. States & Capitals       - Be REAL BRAINY, test your
  145.                           knowledge of states and
  146.                           capitals.
  147. Spelling Accuracy       - You know them, but can't
  148.                           spell so good. LOWER required
  149.                           spelling accuracy and still
  150.                           qualify as having entered a
  151.                           CORRECT answer:
  152.                           Spelling Accuracy
  153.                           Required for Games
  154.                            75%  - Just learning
  155.                            80%  - Practiced a bit
  156.                            90%  - Getting good
  157.                           100% - Scholar

  159. VIEW MENU
  160.  
  161. 48 States       - View contiguous 48 states
  162. 50 States       - View all 50 states
  163. Pick A State    - Pick a single state for full screen
  164.                   view.
  165. Variable Zoom   - Variable zoom. (This algorithm needs
  166.                   a bit of work yet.)
  167. Abbreviations   - Toggle state abbreviations. When on,
  168.                   each state's postal abbreviation is
  169.                   shown near the state's center.

  171. INFORMATION MENU
  172.  
  173. Largest City    - Show largest city in sate, name and
  174.                   circle symbol marking its location.
  175.                   If largest city and capital the same
  176.                   city, both symbols will appear at the
  177.                   same location, one on the other.
  178. State Capital   - Show state capital, name and star
  179.                   symbol.
  180. State Name      - Show state name.
  181. State Population- Show state population.
  182. State Area      - Show state size, sq-miles.
  183. Population/SqMi - Show people/square-mile.
  184. Show All Info   - Show all of the above.

  186. Show Cities     - Show cities for a state. Plots one
  187.                   pixel at the location of each city in
  188.                   the currently displayed state. Neat
  189.                   graphical effect.  Which state is
  190.                   most crowded? What area of the state
  191.                   has the fewest cities (for those who
  192.                   wish to move way out in the middle of
  193.                   NOWHERE!)?
  194. Find a City     - Find a city.

  197. FIND A CITY:

  199.   Search Criteria:

  201. Best Match              - Enter a city name, and the
  202.                           city whose name best matches
  203.                           that (or the first 100%
  204.                           match) is shown. The name is
  205.                           displayed on the graph, and
  206.                           the mouse cursor is placed at
  207.                           the city's location on the
  208.                           map.
  209. All By First Letter     - Browse through the cities by
  210.                           the first letter of the city
  211.                           name.  Enter 'A' to find all
  212.                           the cities that begin with
  213.                           the letter 'A', for example.
  214. Browse All Cities       - Simply browse through all the
  215.                           cities in a state, showing
  216.                           the location and name of
  217.                           each.  Just click the LEFT
  218.                           mouse button to see the next
  219.                           city, or click the right to
  220.                           exit.

  222. By similarity percent:  - You know what city you want
  223.                           to find, but you're not quite
  224.                           sure how it's spelled.  Spell
  225.                           the best you can, after
  226.                           selecting one of the
  227.                           following spelling accuracy
  228.                           percentages.  Let the program
  229.                           do the rest of the work for
  230.                           you!

  239. Plot Current Map        - Plot the current map display
  240.                           on an Epson or compatible
  241.                           printer.

  243.                           the state and capital names.

  245.                           it is shown graphically on the 48
  246.                           contiguous state map as well.
  247. Print Cities for State  - Print some, or all of the
  248.                           cities for a state.

  255. The printer graphics algorithms have been developed, but not
  256. integrated as yet.  Possibly by the summer of '91 the
  257. graphics printing feature will be available; possibly sooner
  258. depending upon user registration responses.  If you are
  259. interested in a Microsoft Windows 3.0 version, let us know.

  264. cities.

  266. Zip code database for large state areas.  Possibly a full
  267. zipcode database for all 32,000 US cities.
